This series of paintings began with the simple idea of creating large-scale portraitures of regional birds. As the portraits evolved, the central figures developed human characteristics and their environments became more complex. Creatively, a variety of themes emerged in the pieces. Topics included ones of an autobiographical nature, individual depictions of others, everyday life experiences and historical events.
Technically, the intricacy of the work grew as juxtaposing elements surfaced in the compositions. Past met present, flat patterns resided along carefully-modeled forms, and triviality collided with seriousness. Light source, the scale of items and perspective (or lack thereof) began to deliberately change within the artwork. My goal became maintaining harmony and balance between the various objects in spite of all the visual inconsistencies.
While contrasting components exist in every one of my pieces, each canvas centers around a central premise. The cryptic nature of the assorted parts leaves the interpretation largely to the discretion of the viewer.
On the whole, my paintings comprise of a representational but not realistic approach to portraiture borrowing traits from cubism, surrealism, pop art and the renaissance masters.
